This project started in 2014, with the aim of producing lutein from microalgae. We approached this objective with a bioreactor devised by Rafael Herena-Garcia. In this bioreactor, microalgae was produced and consumed by zooplankton, which, in this way, enriched its biomass in lutein. The results were not satisfactory in terms of lutein quantity and purity. Therefore, we decided to refocus the bioreactor to produce zooplankton rich in astaxanthin. The results were more satisfactory with this configuration and have recently been accepted for publication (with minor revision) in the journal Scientific Reports.
